NASA’s Proposed Interstellar Mission By Galib Mammad

Image for post

You might not be aware of this yet, but NASA is working on a potential interstellar mission that will occur sometime in the middle of this century. A man by the name of Ralph McNutt has been working on an interstellar probe that will leave this solar system. It has been in the works for a very long time. McNutt is currently sixty-five and has been dreaming of making a huge leap such as this since he was a young man. Currently, around two hundred scientists from around the world are working on this project.

Beginning in the 2030s

If all goes as planned, this interstellar mission is going to begin in the 2030s. It should start with the launch of several nuclear-powered spacecraft that have been designed to go faster than any spacecraft has ever gone. This mission would see the proposed probe travel past Jupiter and the sun. It could even allow NASA to get more information about some of the unexplored worlds that are beyond Pluto.

Somewhere around ten years after this probe is launched, it is going to try to exit the solar system. To do this, the probe is going to need to pierce what is known as the heliosphere. This is a region that forms a sort of cocoon around the solar system due to particles that flow from the sun. Some refer to the heliosphere as the solar winds.

Scientists will be able to gain a greater understanding of the heliosphere as the interstellar probe travels further. By sometime in the 2080s, this probe should allow scientists to get a great view of the heliosphere, and the potential for discoveries about the nature of this solar system’s heliosphere is massive. This is a big undertaking, and many people are working hard to ensure that it can launch successfully. Having a little over a decade to prepare will hopefully be enough to get everything ready and mapped out.

Renewed Interest in Space Travel

The renewed interest in space travel has caused many to start looking to the stars again. This proposed interstellar mission is just one of the many exciting things happening in space currently. Humanity might be on the cusp of making many significant scientific discoveries that will allow for great space exploration possibilities. The work of men such as McNutt and their dreams to go into the stars for answers continue to push humanity forward technologically.

The History Behind the Periodic Table By Galib Mammad

Image for post

The periodic table of the elements is such an essential part of science. Anyone who has taken a chemistry class in high school will be familiar with this periodic table. It was actually created 150 years ago by a Russian chemist named Dmitrii Ivanovich Mendeleev. Mendeleev’s contributions to science are undeniable, and this history of this periodic table is very interesting.

Created in a Single Day

One of the most interesting aspects of the history of the periodic table is that it was supposedly thought up and created in just one day. It only took Mendeleev a single day to come up with the idea for the periodic table, and then he created it that very same day. It is said that he created it on February 17, 1869. Keep in mind that his ability to conceive and create the periodic table in one day could be an exaggeration and that there is no way to verify it one way or another.

The Early Days

The early days before the creation of the periodic table are worth mentioning as well. In 1817, chemists were still struggling to understand atoms and how they worked. A German chemist named Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner noted that some strange things were going on with specific groupings of elements. He noticed important differences in atomic weight while observing the chemical behavior of bromine, chlorine, and iodine.

Eventually, this helped chemists to think about links between the atomic weights and chemical properties. It took until the 1860s for atomic weights to be understood to a great degree. Organizing the elements and creating a mathematical map was something that several people attempted to do. It wasn’t until Mendeleev that this was actually accomplished satisfactorily, though.

Many great scientists would use the periodic table to gain a greater understanding of atoms. They contributed to the groundwork that was laid out by Mendeleev all the way back in 1869. Make no mistake that the creation of the periodic table was a game-changer for scientists. It allowed people to think about the elements in new ways, and it also allowed people to consider undiscovered elements.

The Gap Between Higher Education and Work by Galib Mammad

The way that the education system works currently might be very outdated. People go to school for somewhere between thirteen and twenty years, depending on what type of degree they are going after once they finish high school. After this, they’re expected to be in the workforce for roughly forty-five years or so. The United States has a problem, and many college graduates are still struggling to find work in their chosen fields.

Currently, reports are saying that nearly forty percent of recent college graduates are either unemployed or underemployed. Despite this, there are actually more jobs in America that need to be done than people who are looking for jobs. There’s a skill gap in this country that prevents those jobs from being filled. There also seems to be a problem with the education system, not teaching the skills that are in demand. This gap between higher education and work makes it difficult for America to prosper.

What Is the Solution?

Companies are starting to realize that there are problems with relying on the old way of doing things. In the past, companies used to wait for new workers to come down the pipeline. A certain number of skilled graduates would appear, and this would give them a pool of workers to hire from. There are no guarantees that enough graduates with the proper skills will appear, and this causes companies to have to change their philosophies.

Many are turning to teaching existing employees the new skills that they need to take on new jobs. This is sometimes referred to as “reskilling” or “upskilling” by people in the industry. Employers are now becoming educators out of necessity. The jobs need to be done, and people need to have a way to learn the necessary skills to perform the jobs.

Moving forward, the educational institutions in America need to start thinking about how to close that gap between higher education and work. Changing the things that are being taught, and focusing on career paths that are in demand will be helpful. It’s tough to figure out exactly how to fix a problem such as this, but it is something that can be done over time. Merging education and work can change things significantly.

A Look to the Potential Future

In the future, you will likely see more universities offering co-ops that will involve semester-stretching work experiences. It will allow students to get practical experience in the line of work that they have chosen. Education will be blended with work experiences, and the gap will start to shrink. This is how the problem will be solved, and colleges will move toward a model such as this for degree paths such as liberal arts as well.

Galib Mammad on How Teaching Methods Affect Student Interest in STEM Subjects

It seems that American high school students are not nearly as interested in STEM subjects as they used to be. Students are pursuing these subjects in far fewer numbers than they did in the past. Many high school students say the STEM subjects are simply too difficult and that they are not appealing. Currently, American math scores on standardized tests are at a twenty-year low, and many are getting concerned about things.

How Can Interest in STEM Subjects Be Increased?

If we want to increase the interest in STEM subjects in America, then there are a few ways to go about it. Many students were polled about this topic, and they came back with an answer that might surprise you. They say that interest in STEM subjects would increase if the teaching methods that were being used could be more outside the box. Basically, the way that students are being taught about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are not helping students to stay engaged.

There are several ways that teachers could try to change the way that they approach STEM subjects. Students often become disinterested in these topics because they feel so disconnected from their everyday lives. Topics such as mathematics and engineering aren’t immediately relatable to everyday life unless teachers take the time to show real-life applications for this knowledge. Making STEM subjects more relatable to real-life situations will be helpful in drumming up interest.

It’s also a good idea for teachers to try to make STEM subjects more fun. Science projects and competitions can make things more entertaining for everyone involved. Those who love science already know how intriguing it can be, and students need to be shown the fun side of science so that they can fall in love with it. It can also be beneficial to use more technology in the classroom and to find ways to add in humor. These new teaching approaches could completely change the game for those who are struggling with STEM subjects.

Things Can Change

Things can change if teachers are willing to put in the effort to switch up their teaching methods. Finding new ways to get kids into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics will help America to prosper in the future. The numbers might not look good right now, but things might become different as new teaching approaches are adopted. Either way, it’s easy to see that nurturing young minds properly will be an essential part of the success of this nation.

The Decline of International Student Enrollments at U.S. Universities

In the past, many international students were enrolled at universities across the United States. In recent years, the number of students who have enrolled has dwindled significantly. Why is there such a decline in enrollment numbers for international students? Read on to examine this topic further.

The Enrollment Numbers Have Decreased Two Years in a Row

The enrollment numbers have decreased two years in a row. This decline of international student enrollment began in the 2017–2018 school season and has continued through the 2018–2019 season. Time will tell if the trend continues forward. The biggest decline in enrollment came from international students enrolled in associate’s degree programs.

There are still international students enrolled in American universities. It’s just startling to see the numbers decline after many years of growth. This leads many at American universities to wonder why they are attracting far fewer international students. There are actually several reasons why the interest in American universities might be dying down.

Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric and Social Problems

If you have been paying attention to America in the last several years, then you’ll be aware of the wave of nationalism and anti-immigrant rhetoric that has appeared. These issues could be scaring international students away from the country. America doesn’t seem to be the welcoming place that it once was. The United States was once thought of as a place for people to go to achieve their dreams but that perception could be changing.

The social unrest in America doesn’t help. You can also combine this with the trade war that is going on with China. Many of these things are very off-putting to international students who are looking for a nice place to get an education. If things change in America, this could help to get international student enrollment numbers back up.

Competition From Other Great Universities

It also needs to be noted that the competition from other great universities outside the United States could be drawing some international students away. Australia and Canada both have many great universities to consider and international students could be choosing them in lieu of American universities. The cost of attending American universities is much higher than the cost of attending other universities as well.
